Thirty-Three

Gemma leans into the car and chuckles. “You look like you’ve got constipation.”

“If you’re referring to my deductive skills, you’re probably right.”

“Who were you talking to?”

“Adrian Peach has found Miranda Tate. Or she found him.”

“Sounds like you need to update me, Holmes. Do you fancy a late lunch?”

Though tempted, I need to be careful what I say as my investigations involve her mother. Then there’s Kelly’s past with Rathbone. If I tell Gemma, two of us will be pretending everything’s normal. Kelly will soon get suspicious.

With Ashley under orders to stay clear of me, Adrian chasing his own story, and Gemma too closely involved, it looks like I’m working on my own.

“Can we take a rain check?” Then, seeing the disappointment on Gemma’s face, I suggest we have a pizza with Frances like the old days. “Shall we say seven o’clock?”

“As long as I can stay over,” Gemma says. “It’s not much fun when your mother’s bonking away all night in the next room.”

My phone saves me. I pick up, wondering what Ashley wants.

“I hope you don’t have any plans for this evening, Kent. I’m going to cook you something special to say thank you for being the best friend a mixed up detective inspector could wish for.”

“I thought I was strictly off limits.”

“You are from tomorrow morning. That’s when I officially return to my old job.”

“In that case,” I say, “I can offer you something more interesting this evening.”
